notes: the twenty fourth of twenty five kisses under the mistletoe at a Christmas party Nikos is hosting

"It's fine, darling," said Mariel, perched on the arm of the sofa beside Tristan, and Aya snuggled up to him with her stocking feet stuck under the pillows for warmth. "Go ahead."

"Do you mind, Mary, dear?" asked Tristan. He frowned thoughtfully up at his wife, who smoothed his hair.

She slid down from her spot. "I'll get you a drink. I think you deserve it."

"Thank you, love," he called, as Mariel disappeared into the hall. He should have called out a "heads up," as Glory deposited a sleeping Kristopher on the armchair and stood to fetch himself a glass of champagne.

He had been invited to a quiet evening in with his niece and some friends of his son, and instead thanks to their blasted host's damnable mistletoe, he had spent the evening covering Kristopher's eyes and wishing he had another glass. Thus far, he had avoided the narrow hallway when he could so he wouldn't have any further unfortunate run-ins beneath the mistletoe.

Mariel turned suddenly from the kitchen, deciding champagne might have to suit her husband, as the kitchen was occupied by Silas and Koji. So intent were they on each other that they didn't hear when she uncomfortably cleared her throat, so she hurried back out into the hallway and straight into her uncle.

"Oh," she said.

"Merry Christmas to you, too, Mariel," said Glory, snippily.

"Must we?" Mariel asked, looking not at Glory, or Nikos, but straight up to the ceiling and beyond, as if praying to God she could get out of kissing her uncle.

"We already made one exception," said Nikos.

"Fine," grumbled Mariel. As quickly as possible, she stood on her toes and placed a kiss on her uncle's cheek. Without bothering to pour a glass for her husband, she merely grabbed the bottle by the neck and scurried back into the safety of the den, thinking it must be nearly time to go home.
