summary: how Sinéad came to be on the Nebula's Heart

red-headed
(step)
daughter;

her (half-)siblings grew up speaking
a language that tastes foreign on her tongue
flavored with a dash of Mediterranean sunlight
and a heavy helping of Catholic guilt

her father married her (step-)mother
like a mourning king in a fairy tale;
Mama isn’t evil
Mama just isn’t Mam
and Sinéad misses her
like Eden
consumed in hellfire

you can’t get angry at the dead
there’s no rage at the Savior she stopped believing on;
no loving God could do that
she can’t hate what isn’t real to her

instead, Sinéad screams at
Mama, who isn’t her mama,
and Mama’s four sons
and one daughter
and especially, at Mama’s husband:
Sinéad’s father

she screams like an angel
until they are estranged:
separated by an ocean
metaphorical
literal
metaphorical
again

the Atlantic becomes a sky full of stars
Sinéad escapes
gravity
weight of her mother’s grave and her own grief
no longer holding her down
she floats
empty

as if she can escape family
like the gravitational pull of her home planet
rocketing into the heavens
she finds no God there

far out of orbit
she looks across a sea of stars
at the earth rising over alien horizons
and she feels its pull
calling her

home

Sinéad thinks,
in heaven, there is forgiveness
she says,
“as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end”
